Virtual Journalsim Summit

I attended the round table in the afternoon during the virtual journalism summit, and I have to admit, I was pretty baffled the whole time.

Coming from a person who works in newspapers right now, I'm understandably a little sad about the state of print journalism right now. Sure, everyone is moving to the Web, but it's a shame that in-depth, print news is going out of style so quickly when so many people still have a passion for it.

That being said, I don't really understand the legitimacy of reporting on what's going on in a virtual world. Perhaps I don't understand the "virtual world" concept in general, but to allow Joe Schmoe to think he's a journalist because he's "reporting" on what's going on in a world that isn't even real -- it just blows my mind.

However, I do think it was cool that so many kids were involved in Club Penguin, writing for their little newspaper...little is an understatement. If I were the editor of the Club Penguin newspaper, I'd be stressed out with 8 million readers.

Bloggy Blog Blog

The easiest thing to go with was some trashy celebrity blog, so I found this one:

http://www.damnimcute.com/

Don't let the name deceive you. It's not that cute. Kind of like Perez Hilton only less...credible. Yeah, I called Perez Hilton credible. As humerous as it is, it's also sort of true. Everyone knows who Perez Hilton is not only for his blog, but also because he's seen in tabloids himself (whether or not he's commenting on them).

Basically, this person (whoever he/she/it is) has combined any and every papparazi-esk story he could find, put them in a blog and commented on them. The postings are humerous, and include pictures (without any credit given, which I thought was interesting). The stories the posts are based on, however, are credited through a link or a mention.

It must get some attention though, because there are advertisments on it. This shows it's not just your ordinary "wordpress blog." Yes, I like wordpress better. Sad...I have blog preferences.

Anyway, I think this site is pathetic. I'm going back to perezhilton.com. He draws pictures on the pictures that make me giggle.
